What lawyer do you use? Who’s your accountant?

I’ve been getting these questions a lot lately. Enough that I thought I should write this post. And the reason is, is that most of the people asking me don’t need these services. Yet.

When I started my last company, I couldn’t wait to start having conversations with lawyers and accountants. It made me feel important. Like I had something real. Like I was a real CEO. And they loved me too. They always answered my calls, they even took me out to lunch. And then I got the bill.

Most new entrepreneurs I’ve spoken to lately, are doing the same thing. Rushing to set up complex legal structures and financial models before they have any idea whether their idea is going to sink or swim.

Businesses need lawyers and accountants, but unless you have money flowing through the company (either in the form of paying customers or investment)…..you don’t really have a business. You have a theory.

A much better use of your time would be to go out and prove your theory to be correct, rather than lunching with your lawyers. If you’re right, and cash is coming at you faster than you know what to do with it, that’s when you bring in the suits. Champagne problems.

Execute like a monkey humping a coconut, on your product and getting customers, and the rest will fall into place when it needs to. Howard Lindzon put’s it nicely.

Having setup companies in a couple places now, I will say that Silicon Valley has this nailed. More so than most places, the firms that operate here understand volatility of the startup ecosystem and have morphed to fit the environment. Many firms will defer payments, or take small equity stakes to cover their initial fees. Ping me (paul [at] skyscrpr [dot] com) if you’d like to chat about this a little more. I have a killer team with me on Skyscrpr that have already been worth their weight in gold. But we only brought them on when we really needed them.

As always, the phone lines are open, so hit us up if you want to chat.

Also, this is an awesome article on how to check the boxes when the time comes to officially start your company.

Our top blogs to watch - round one.

We read a lot of blogs in our day to day. We read blogs that have been around for years, and then every once in a while we stumble across an awesome blogger, quietly crafting beautiful posts in their little corner of the internet.

So today, inspired by our friends at Altitude Design Summit we’ve decided to put together a list of a few of our favs.

Drum roll please……..

The Artful Desperado -  One my absolute favorite sites on the internet, mostly because of the ESL slipups and awesome ramblings about urinals, cheap beer and cupcakes.

Pencil Shavings Studio - An assault of color and amazing finds from Graphic Designer Rachel Singleton. Plus she sells beautiful cases for your iPhone/iPad. Definitely check her out.

I Like Nice Things - Fresh off a redesign, Alyssa has some killer style, awesome photography and beautiful layouts that she does all by herself. Plus she started WLWL Magazine which is growing like a weed.

Element 75 - I’m probably late to this party but I just found this blog written by self proclaimed “art + design obsessed” Caroline Williamson. And this is my favorite thing I’ve seen in a long time.

That’s it for round one.

So if you or a friend have a great blog you’d like to share with us, please leave it in the comments or send it over to paul [at] skyscrpr [dot] com.

High fives!

We’ve been accepted to GrowLab.

What’s GrowLab you ask? GrowLab is an accelerator started by a group of great investors including Debbie Landa (Dealmaker Media), Boris Wertz (W Media Ventures), Jason Bailey (East Side Games), Leonard Brody (Clarity Digital) and Mike Edwards (Initio Group).

We’re honored to have been accepted into the program for the Spring Class. It is a great step in the right direction for Skyscrpr. It allows us to move forward with confidence knowing that we have a great team behind us.

We’re also super excited to be working with a killer group of companies.

BlueBatGames, innovators of BlueBox, the engine that allows game developers to easily build on social platforms.

Cinecoup, disrupts how feature films have been created, financed and distributed.

Food.ee, a new product from Invoke Media, the maker of HootSuite, Food.ee simplifies group ordering of delivery food for offices.

Wantering, lets you visually browse, find and buy the latest trends from fashion blogs and curation networks.

Can’t wait to meet everyone and see what you’re all working on.

Thanks again to the GrowLab team for including us in this awesome group. Our feet are firmly planted in the starting blocks. Pull the trigger and let’s do this!

We’re live on AngelList. Now the fun begins.

I don’t know why, but putting your startup on AngelList feels a lot like what I would imagine sending your kid to school for the first time feels like.

Is he going to be popular? Will the other kids like him? Will he be able to score the cute girl to take to the dance?

For us it’s more about will it trend on AngelList? Will people follow us? Will (insert amazing investor here) invest?

But, much like sending your kid to school, you send your startup out there into the wild, knowing that you’ve built the best product and the best team you can, and that now it’s time to hustle like hell to make sure it succeeds in life. Now the hard work starts.

We have already got a great team behind the product. Our advisors include Arjun Dev Arora from Retargeter and Dennis Pilarinos and we couldn’t be happier to have them. We’ll be adding more in the next few days.

In the meantime, you can get a glimpse of what we’re building here.

Don Draper or Dr. Seuss?

Back in the day, before Theodore Seuss Geisel drew the kid’s books we all know and love, he was an ad man! And a damn good one too.

San Francisco, we’re here!

It’s been a couple months since Jacob and I told our wives that we wanted to head to SF to start building Skyscrpr. We both gave up our homes in Vancouver and Portland in October 2011. Since then we have stayed at our parents, friends, and slept in numerous “side of highway” motels. Our wives deserve medals!

It has all been leading to this point. Although our small team has been working on this for a couple months, now that we are all in the same room it feels more real than ever! First things first, find a place to live/work.

Airbnb to the rescue

Since we have been working remotely for the last couple months, jacking internet connections where we can, having one place to live and work for a few weeks feels really good. But finding a place was tough to say the least.

Anyone that has ever tried to rent a place in the greater SF area will understand when I say “Holy Shit!”. This town is expensive! Not only are the places steep on any budget, but they want 4 months deposit, your first born and 6 hours of your time to fill out the 22 page application. Clearly this wasn’t going to work!

We checked out Airbnb and found an awesome little place in Daly City (just south of SF - between SF and Palo Alto). The decor is a bit like going back in time to when men drank scotch for lunch and women wore puffy skirts, but it’ll do for now.

The house has been named Claude.

We quickly re-arranged the furniture, got some desks and got to work! We only have a few months of runway to make this happen, so there’s no time to waste.

Oh, and we got the cheapest white-board on the planet - startups take note. Twelve bucks!

San Francisco, you’re the greatest!

In the very short time we’ve been here, we’ve made some great progress. There seems to be a social currency here that I have never experienced before. People love to introduce you to who they know and they always seem to have the perfect person for you to talk to. One meeting almost always lead to another meeting and then another one.

We are super excited to be talking to the people we have been, and will be, talking to.

Where we’re at.

We just launched our new splash page (which we showed off at the last Launchrock Happy Hour and they were stoked - post on how we built it here). We have been getting lots of signups so thanks to everyone who has shared it. If you haven’t……all the cool kids are doing it.

Our product demo is going to be ready to go this week and it’s going to make your brain go boom! I know we’re a little biased, but we think this is a “change the world” product and we can’t wait to show you!

Now that we’re here, let’s connect.

As always you can hit us up on Twitter, Facebook or email me at paul@skyscrpr.com if you have any questions, or want to chat about how we can make advertising better for publishers. We’re listening!

How we integrated the LaunchRock widget

With very little effort, it’s super easy to tweak the LaunchRock subscription widget to fit seamlessly into your new startup’s pre-launch landing page. Here’s how I did it on Skyscrpr:

Settings things up in the LaunchRock Admin

Landing Page

Under Page Theme, my goal was to choose a barebones theme to minimize the amount of overriding I’d have to do later. I chose the last option, with black text and a transparent bounding box.

Hide all of the elements you don’t want via the LaunchRock admin’s Visibility Settings toggles. (No, you can’t remove the “powered by launchrock” badge.) I removed the Announcement Bar, Tagline, Description and Instructions.

Use the Save & Continue button in the upper-right to move on.

(Protip: Navigating to a different step in the process via the 1–6 tabs will not save the changes made on your current tab.)

Sharing Page

The visibility settings for the page are a bit less powerful than I’d prefer. You can’t remove the text above the buttons via a toggle (I remove them later with CSS), nor can you remove the links underneath the Share Link (again, a bit of CSS to the rescue).

Domain Settings

Using your favorite text editor, create a blank file and save it to the public webspace of your choice. (I named mine the creative lr-override.css.)

Choose Widget, toggle Show Background Image & Announcement Bar and Show Logo / Site Name off, and enter the public URL of the CSS file you just uploaded in the field for URL of Custom Stylesheet.

Click Update Preview & Generate Code, then copy out the freshly generated code from the first textarea and paste it into the HTML of your landing page.

(I recommend copying the Facebook Open Graph code as well, although you’ll probably want to customize it a bit. That’s outside the scope of what I’m covering here.)

Creating an override CSS file

First thing I did was to modify the bounding box to remove all shadows, borders and background colors. I believe the Page Theme set above is what is giving my particular div the .light-c class, so double-check what yours is if this code doesn’t have an effect.

.light-c .site {
    background: none;
    -moz-box-shadow: none;
    -webkit-box-shadow: none;
    box-shadow: none;
    border: 0;
}

Hiding things the LR Admin had no toggle for

There’s a couple of elements you’ll need to hide via CSS. Use your favorite browser’s inspector to target them all or use mine as a starting point:

.lrdiscoverwidget .site-tagline,
.lrdiscoverwidget .site-desc,
.lrdiscoverwidget .inviteform label,
#launchrock .invite-label,
.lrdiscoverwidget .share-via-email,
.lrdiscoverwidget .social-links,
.lrdiscoverwidget .live-stats {
    display: none !important;
}

Style & Positioning

Lastly I made some style and positioning tweaks to the text field, submit button, sharing buttons, and LaunchRock logo:

.lrcontent .twitter {
    margin-left: -7px;
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .share-link {
    margin: 0 0 4px;
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .like {
    text-align: left;
    height: 30px;
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .site {
    padding: 0;
    border-radius: 0;
    width: 100%;
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .inviteform {
    margin-bottom: 3px
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .site-powered-by {
    text-align: left;
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .inviteform .field {
    margin: 0 4px 0 0;
    border: 2px solid #333;
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .inviteform .submit {
    padding: 0;
    height: 33px;
    line-height: 32px;
    position: relative;
    top: 2px;
    background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #AED7D5 0%, #63C9C3 3%, #40C4BC 49%, #34B3AC 100%);
    background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #AED7D5 0%, #63C9C3 3%, #40C4BC 49%, #34B3AC 100%);
    background: -o-linear-gradient(top, #AED7D5 0%, #63C9C3 3%, #40C4BC 49%, #34B3AC 100%);
    background: linear-gradient(top, #AED7D5 0%, #63C9C3 3%, #40C4BC 49%, #34B3AC 100%);
    }

.lrdiscoverwidget .inviteform .submit:hover {
    background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #C6D4EB 0%, #6094EB 3%, #4884EB 49%, #3B7CEB 100%);
    background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #C6D4EB 0%, #6094EB 3%, #4884EB 49%, #3B7CEB 100%);
    background: -o-linear-gradient(top, #C6D4EB 0%, #6094EB 3%, #4884EB 49%, #3B7CEB 100%);
    background: linear-gradient(top, #C6D4EB 0%, #6094EB 3%, #4884EB 49%, #3B7CEB 100%);
}

.lrdiscoverwidget .site-powered-by {
    padding: 0;
}

Animating the introduction of the widget

Because the widget won’t allow me to hide specific elements via the admin, they get rendered to the page until my CSS has a chance to remove them. This can cause an ugly flash of unwanted content. I went with the (slightly hacky, but very fast to implement) option of hiding the widget for two seconds then animating it onto the page, giving the styling a chance to happen “behind the scenes” before presenting it to the viewer.

The end result is a bit of dramatic flair, drawing attention to the subscribe field; it imbues a “most important part of the page” vibe.

Dan Eden’s animate.css was instrumental in quickly adding a CSS-only effect that looks great across all devices. (Especially since CSS animations are natively hardware-accelerated.)

I assigned my bounding div for the LaunchRock section .animated .fadeInUp classes, then in the main CSS file for the page gave the div -vendor-animation-delay: 2s;, to delay the fadeInUp animation two seconds.

There you have it—a LaunchRock widget you can integrate and animate into any design. Leave us a comment when you’ve got your LaunchRock page up, we want to check out what you’re working on! (Don’t forget to sign up for access to Skyscrpr—if your site runs advertising, you’ll want to pick up what we’re putting down.)

Fake Grimlock, a caffeine-fueled giant robot dinosaur, has been stomping through the blogs of tech luminaries such as Fred Wilson, Eric Ries and Brad Feld dispensing advice and commentary on the startup scene. Here at CNNMoney, we’re fans of his rather stark perspective and tendency…
